Montserrat - Barcelona
We had our first hiccup of the trip. We think that’s pretty good, and it was just a small hiccup. We decided to visit the monastery at Montserrat. It’s in the foothills north of Barcelona. We took a train to a small town and were supposed to catch an aerial cable car, but we missed the stop. We got off at the next stop and waited about an hour to go back. No big deal. We hope this is the worst of our hiccups.

When we got up to the monastery, we had lunch: a Spanish ham and cheese sandwich (bocadillo). We then spent some time walking around, taking in the views, and visited the basilica.

After an afternoon coffee we boarded the cog train — the other option for getting to and from the monastery.
After our respite at the Monistrol station, we hopped on a train down to the correct stop. We got in line for the ride up 2000 feet to the monastery.

We realized that, including the U.S., we’ve ridden cog trains in four countries and aerial cable cars in five.
After the ride into Barcelona we did what one should do in Spain in the late afternoon — we took a siesta.
The main reason we added a few days prior to the cruise was … food. Since we’ve been to Paris and Barcelona before, we’ve taken the opportunity to enjoy the vibes and relish the food. Tonight we made reservations for and ate at a restaurant recommended to us by a group we met while in Costa Rica last summer.
In true Spanish fashion, we made reservations for 9:30 PM. We finished at about 11:45 PM. We ate too much. It was fantastic!
